Rhetorical Analysis of Four Sources On Cyber Bully
In the journal article, “Digital Media and Everyday Abuse” by Sara Perry where she was
overcoming a lot of challenges during her online online writing and personal blog.Perry received
hate and sexual offense through online which came from various institutions and from
professional acquaintance throughout the world. Some messages were very inappropriate and
very explicit which was also favor ranged. For example,”Their assessment has been public and
often quite faceless.”This shows how Sara Perry was embarrassed about being cyberbullied
through social media.
In the NewYork Times article, “ In Person or in Pixels, It’s still Bullying” by Jennifer
Medina informs the readers about the event where they talk about how students are being cyber
bullied. County officer Ms. Aftab states, “It’s happening, and only one who doesn’t know about
are the parents.”Medina then provides claims from the parents that how children are being
bullied without any concerns from their parents.
In the blog,”Cyberbullying and Social Media” by Bahati Rusell expressed his own
experienced with cyber bully and the harshness of this in our society. Rusell focused how
cyberbullying is causing suicidal tendency in today’s world. Also its affecting young children in
a negative way. He also mentioned that people don’t think about other people’s feelings when
they make a comment on social media and that’s why it leaves many bad consequences later on.
In the academic journal, the article” Psychological,Physical, and Academic Correlates of
Cyberbullying and Traditional Bullying” by Robin M. Kowalski and Susan P. Limber talked
about how cyberbullying cannot only happen through social media. It can also be physical and
in academic based too which cause anxiety, depression, low self-esteem. They also claimed that
there are many types of being bullied which is not based on any age for anyone. Kowalski and
Limber also provided many studies, research based evidence, research method to prove that
cyber bully is spreading negative consequences in the society.
Rhetorical Situation
Sara claimed,” I was embarrassed and the communication and so confused about how to
reply that I ignored them for nearly two years.” She also claimed when it went out of control she
decided to respond to those comments. The author Sara Perry was quiet for so long and later on
when she couldn’t take the social media abuse she raised her voice against it. So, she began to
study other women’s writing about cyberbullying like Anita Sarkeesian, Mary Beard and many
others. All of the women had a huge supporter who helped them bring light in society and stood
against digital media abuse. And perry also did the same by sharing her opinion on cyber
bullying and replying to those negative comments.
The author Jeniffer Medina decided to publish this article because of more than 500
parents, teachers, and students came to law enforcement officials on February 13, 2005, just to
complain about cyberbullying. She also claimed the statement of the parents that how children’s
dont talk about being cyber bullied because they feel like their parents will stop them from using
social media. Also because of modern technology, the children can use the outside world in a
click. And thats why its easy for them to make a judgement without even knowing the
consequence which is harmful for them. For example,” Youre telling them stuff that you don’t
even know what it can do.” This shows that people in the social media just say what they have to
without knowing the fact that it can cause some bad effects to others.
The publisher Bahati Russull published his own opinion about what he feels about the
cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is spreading in a vast amount of society which leaves negative
damage. He also wrote about his own experience that impacted his life. For example,”When I
was faced with cyber bullying, I was not humiliated not just because of what was said but
because of who may have seen it.”It means that the author was nervous about how people have
seen the hateful comments. And that’s why social media has a big impact on our lives and also
gives everyone a voice because we might delete the comments but people eventually have it
because they might take a screenshot and shared it.So, eventually it leaves a bad effects on the
people and the society. And that’s why nobody thinks anything before doing or saying about
others .Rusell didn’t feel humiliated when he was victimized.Instead of that he felt insecure
because social media people may have already saved it even if it was deleted.
The academic journal is related to ethos rhetorical situation. Kowalski and Limber
provided a chart that showed no sex or age were included to be bullied by social media or any
type of bulling. They also added some personal experience to provide the readers to get the
reader’s attention. There are many negative sides of being bullied that was one of the highlights of
the journal. Anxiety, depression, lack of communication, less attendance in school or in the place
can also be measured in the risk of cyberbullying
The Purpose
The purpose of Sara Perry was to aware the people that bullying someone out social
media is not appropriate. Inappropriate messages about someone’s physical appearance and the
dress is a crime. For example, Sara says “I was embarrassed about these comments and so
confused about how to reply that I ignored them for nearly two years.” This tells how Perry was
so clueless about how to reply to those hate comments. Perry raised her voice and responded to
the messages to the audience that we should speak up against the digital media and everyday
abuse that most of the people don’t like it is show the concern of. She also tried to make sure that
the media abuse doesn’t happen to any other people in the society.
The NewYork Times article aims at informing the parents, teachers and students to be
aware who doesn’t know what’s going in the social media world. In the event the father of
Briarcliff Manor (student) Mr. Doug Messer, state that,”People can just stop themselves when
they’re in front of each other to make a comment but when they use social media they don’t have
the sense to stop themselves.” And thats why its to cyberbully.
Although the above articles have the take debate in the blog, it talks about the negative effects of
cyberbullying which is causing suicide. It also aims to educate the readers about the social media
and people who are communicating suicide because of the websites.
However, the aim of the academic journal is to be aware of the audience and the
readers about cyber bully. The author Robin M Kowalski and Susan P. Limber used a lot of
negative comments to lead the readers in a good way. They also included a result of a research
where age and sex didn’t matter. Research showed that participants all were eventually got
victimized of different kind of cyber bullies.
The Audience
The audience from the four articles is multiple. However, in the journal article and the
blog both have some commons in their audience. Most of their audience is people from online
and people are very active in reading personal discussions. However for the journal article the
writer Sara Perry had a different audience rather than active social media people. She had
audience from different institutes and professional people who would do comments. In the
journal article Perry says, “They came directly from professional acquaintances of mine who
were based at various institutions around the world.” Both authors Sara Perry and Bahati Russell
gave attention to their own experiences and inappropriate and sexual offense. In the journal
article the author also seeks the attention of the regular people who don’t pay attention about this
topic.
Also, in the magazine article and in the newspaper article the writer referees teachers,
students and parents as it’s audience. The targeted audience is parents and teachers because those
are the people who are concerned about their children’s attitude towards bullying. It can be
noticed by the phrase in the newspaper, “ More than 500 parents, teachers and students and law
enforcement officials gathered at the Country Center to discuss about cyber bullying.” And also
in the magazine article by Robin M. Kowalski and Susan P. Limber states that, ”Many children
and youth have been involved in traditional form of bullying.” which shows the audience for
both magazine and newspaper articles is referred for the children, parents and teachers.
The Genre
The genre of the article is based on the writer’s own experience. Correspondence that
appears in,” Digital Media and Everyday Abuse.” The article was published on April,2014 and
its language is very intellectual. The article can be reached in print and online.
The NewYork Time is a popular newspaper. And the article is written in that which is
very straight forward. The language is described simply so that all type of audience can
understand easily. The article is very different because its a very confidential topic and
debatable.
The genre of the blog is written based on publishers own experience. And that’s why it
was more described in simple and evalutable language. It also have some good sauce and solid
evidence that can be studied. The blog is well organized and also included some pictures of
cyberbullying.
The genre of this work is academic based. Just because it’s an academic journal it had
some strong topics to study about. The journal is loaded with good evidence and its well
organized like any other journals. But its slightly different because it doesn’t have any pictures.
The Stance
Although, the four articles is almost have the same stance which is cyber bully. Both
journal article and blog post associate with their own personal experience that how cyberbullying
and social media can cause many problems in our personal life and can be so dangerous. For
example, in the journal article the writer Sara Perry says, ” These media make possible
relationship, idea sharing, knowledge making and forms of epistemological that are exceptional
and they can also be deeply dangerous.” Similarly the blog article asserts, “It does more negative
damage than positive things in society.”This means that cyber bully is spreading a negative
impact on people’s lives so as in the society. Both articles were in a formal language and sincere
about the tone.
Moreover, the newspaper article and the academic journal both express how
cyberbullying can cause social anxiety and how the student, teachers and parents are mostly
affected by this. And also how common this problem has become through the society. In a
demonstration newspaper article, a group of 150 students had been victims or perpetrators of
bullying in some way. And also in the academic journal article by Robin M. Kpwalski and Susan
P. Limber illustrates how cyberbullying can cause some physical health effects like depression,
low self esteem, lack of sleep etc. Both newspaper and academic article writers use their strong
and formal language so that it’s easy for the audience to understand.
However, the blog article,” Cyber bully and Social Media” by Bahati ruselle added
some more evidence that can be researched in order to study. Also some pictures were added to
the article so that it’s easy to understand the topic. And also in the journal article, the writer
Kowalski and limber used so many charts that show the percentage of people being bullied and
also added so many references about cyberbully which might help people to study or to do more
research about it.
